Artist Statement
EDWARD HORTICK - Artist Statement…Follow In My Footsteps
Once I create a photographic image, I hope afterward, anyone looking at my work will enjoy the virtual experience of “following in my footsteps”. Certain elements within the composition may be organic, while others are more subtle and invariably left to my photographic interpretation. All the information I see in the lens is taken into consideration in my mind’s eye before I release the shutter. My goal is to communicate the statements in the image to the viewer.
Street Photography is candid photography and encounters random incidents in public places. If the technique is to be real, the image records unposed moments. These pictures could be of strangers taken without their knowledge. My photos are taken spontaneously as people go about their daily life. Street Photography makes a viewer think. Hopefully, the photographer leaves the viewer observing the image the option of experiencing a specific feeling, story or idea. These images tell us about life and encourage us to think and ask ourselves questions.
To me, landscape, nature, marine and coastal images, go beyond the scenery to capture the perspective. Sometimes they may include a metaphor. There are usually a number of elements in the composition that draw us into the image. They connect us to nature and capture the essence of the grandeur or details in the subject. Images to which one relates to can be important in our lives. Photographs may be serene or bring back memories. Photographs can transport us to another place, spike our imagination, or give us a sense of being there.
The body of work presented to you on my website incorporates many of the various aspects of the grammar of photography. As a photographer, when I practice my craft, I see light, it’s quality, direction, time of year and time of day. Other important elements I focus on are the vantage point, time and motion, the frame and edges, negative space, shapes and the arrangement of forms. These concepts are intuitively considered and addressed before releasing the shutter.
I have given much thought to the images I have produced and hope you will see a story in each of my photographs as you follow in my footsteps. Please enjoy looking at the images on my website.
